The big dog bites back
Old Boys 6 : Thistle 1
Coming at the end of a hard week of football which had seen the men in red play twice already, the team could have been forgiven for looking a little flat. Plenty to play for after being upset in the first round of the season. The players still feeling the hurt of that match where they managed to lose a game that was all but won.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of Coach Lindsay to give a rousing speech pre-match the team were down 1-0 inside the first minute. A really bad back pass from the usually dependable Captain Low pounced on by the opposition striker and despite Frank making the first save he couldn’t keep out the second effort.
Fortune favours us sometimes and that plus a dose of perseverance up front saw a quick equaliser when the Thistle goalie tried to clear the ball and it cannoned straight off Kyle and back into the goal.
For the next 35 minutes there wasn’t a lot of quality from either team but on the stroke of halftime two further quick goals from Kyle, who was doing an excellent job pesting the Thistle defense really turned the fixture.
After halftime the game was effectively over when Brandon lobbed the onrushing keeper for a 4-1 lead. At this point Stouty and Oscar departed to get their dance shoes on for the ball. The Kyle and Brandon show continued as Kyle turned provider for two further goals from Brandon.
A much better second half performance with the subs injecting energy into the fixture for us. We now head into a fortnight off with the news that Waihopai have pulled out of Donald Gray. Our next match will be at Queen’s Birthday vs Grants Brae.
