Gore arrived at Waverley Park for this round 2 clash on the back of racking up a large 7-3 score line vs Thistle the week before. Old Boys on the other hand were licking their wounds after being well beaten by Park.
A stiff westerly greeted the teams for this fixture on Old Boys Club Day. Gore were out of the blocks early and looked to settle the better of the teams with some early long-range shots on target. Old Boys for their part were struggling with control and touches were generally scrappy.
However, the home team were first to strike against the run of play when Stoovie picked up a long throw in and created some confusion in the box which left Kyle with a half yard tap in. Coach Reuben was hoping this confidence booster would settle the team, but Gore went straight back to their knitting.
A free kick which was hit low into the box seemed to confuse the Old Boys defenders and allowed a close-range finish from Gore’s big dutchman. He was unlucky not to double his tally when from a similar position he shot wide.
Into the break at 1-1 and there were some stern words and encouragement to shoot more frequently. The 2nd stanza saw half chances for both teams with neither team really taking the game by the horns.
As the subs came into the match, they looked to make an impact and from an Old Boys mistake at the back Gore were able to take the lead via a jammy shot that nutted Terry. Old Boys should have been back level almost straight away when James Tucker hit the post from close range at a corner.
A second mistake saw Gore extend the lead further with just 4 mins to play and that was game over.
Another disappointing loss for the team especially in front of the home crowd on club day. Next week is off to Thistle and from here it becomes must win each week.
