Junior Coach Profile: Andy Doherty
Andy Doherty: 9th Grade – Old Boys Madrid
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Andy Doherty – I am the coach for the Grade 9 Old Boys Madrid team. I am a Scotsman in his mid-40s. I have grown up watching/supporting football.
What inspired you to become a coach? Is there a particular coach you look up to?
I had been thinking about coaching last year, but decided to take the plunge this year when my daughter said she was keen to play. I have always liked Gordon Strachan’s wit and wisdom (he is current manager of Scotland)
What is it like to be coached by you? How would others describe their experience playing for you?
I don’t know what it’s like to be coached by me?
What gives you the most satisfaction from coaching?
It’s nice to see happy smiling faces of young people enjoying the game I love. It has been nice to see some of the players already gaining in confidence from the short time we have been playing together.
Will you continue to coach at this grade of have you plans to progress up through the grades?
Not sure what the future holds in terms of coaching
Do you see yourself coaching a senior team in the future?
Not sure what the future holds in terms of coaching
Tell us a little bit about your current team?
We are playing well so far, and have been comfortable winners against two other local teams. We have the luxury of a larger player pool, and I suspect some kids have more knowledge of the game, which is great. They are all keen to play, but are also aware that we need to have rolling substitutes.
How often do you train and what does a typical training session entail?
We train on a Wednesday afternoon – some basic skills then a kick about at the end (which is the kids favorite part – they don’t want to stop!)
How do you communicate with your players and parents during the season?
I email the parents once to twice a week – they are appreciative of this.
What will your teams “hang their hat on?” what will define your teams’ play? i.e if I was to watch your team play what should I expect?
Our team is hungry to attack and score!
What are the strengths of your team this year?
There are several individuals with good touches, and also some players who are happy to pass the ball to people in a better position for the betterment of the team.
What is/are your vision/goals for your team this year? How will you define success?
I would love all of the players to want to continue playing football next year due to enjoying this season, and I would secretly like to come top of our league!
What would be the highlight of playing in your program? What do you want kids to take from your program? – “The Purpose – Not The Goal”
I don’t have a ‘Player of the Day’ – we are a team and so that’s the way we should view ourselves
Have you any message to parents or players who might question playing time or other coaching decision you will have to make throughout the year?
No messages – I’m sure people will approach me with any thoughts they have!
Final Thoughts? View of Old Boys AFC?
Final thoughts – To Parents: thanks for letting me coach your kids. View of OBAFC: I have been playing for Old Boys for a number of years, and have made some great friends through the club.
