OLD BOYS CRUISE PAST SOUTHEND
9 April 2016
Old Boys 5 – (Atain (3), Henry (2))
Southend United – 2
Old Boys hit their stride in the first home game of the 2016 season with a comfortable 5-2 win over Southend at Waverley Park.
The game was out of site for the visitors after barely half an hour as the hosts ran away with a 4 nil. From the get go the reds pressed Southend high up the pitch and looked to make the most of the open spaces in behind their back four. Henrys darting runs in behind caused all sorts of problems and it was from this that the first goal came. Henry was brought down 25 yards from goal after going through and from the free kick Atain stepped up and found the top right corner in style leaving the keeper rooted to the ground. Barely 5 minutes later Henry won another free kick in virtually the same spot and again Atain stepped up, surely not again? This time the striker curled a wonderful shot over the wall into the top left corner with the keeper again a mere spectator. The home team were buzzing and Henry soon found the net for himself after beating his man in the box and calmly sliding the ball home with the outside of his foot for 3 nil. Atain then completed his hat-trick on the half hour mark with another cracking finish. Alex and Sam had some neat build up play that lead to Alex laying the ball off and Atain wrapped his foot round it from outside the box and the ball flew into the top corner. Southend did pull a goal back just before halftime when Frank made a great stop one on one but the rebound off the post fell kindly to the striker to bury into an empty net.
Sticher wanted the game to be killed off in the second half and despite a lot of effort the home side couldnt quite hit the heights of the first 45. Henry grabbed Old Boys fifth and final goal with 15 minutes to go after beating the with a clever finish. Southend again grabbed another consolation with a bullet finish but it was to littler too late.
Skiddey and Jason covered some huge meters on the flanks and the midfield trio of Fozzie Sam and Alex had Southend totally outplayed. The back three were very solid and look to be forming a great combination, and Franks confidence and ability are growing by the second. Between Atain and Henry there looks to be a potent partnership forming and it will promise a lot of goals.
Two weeks off for the reds now before a massive match away to Queenstown.
Special mention to Sam who has had to leave us to go back to England but for only a short period. He will be missed for those few games.
