Old Boys Leave it late
Old Boys vs Winton 22nd July Waverley Park
Old Boys 2 (Hammy, Ben) – Winton 1
Coming off the Bye week Old Boys should have been refreshed for this clash as it signalled the start of the third and final round for Donald Gray in 2017. What unfolded for the spectators was anything but pretty.
Old Boys were fortunate to have the services of Atain up front as Southland’s match was a washout in Dunedin. Unfortunately no goalies were available with Alex on holiday and Brandon trying his hand at skiing. Up would step Coach Lindsay to stand behind the sticks, coming off a Div 1 match where he had just let in 3 this was by no means inspirational.
The home side started strongly but were not finding much penetration in front of goal and were not getting shots away. Winton doing a good job of pressuring us in the middle of the park.
With frustration building a mistake was coming and sadly it was the keeper that made it. A poor clearance giving their best player a chance to go 1:1 and calmly finish the goal. This further rallied Winton and they had another good opportunity not long after but rather than a calm finish a power volley was attempted with Reuben could tip onto the crossbar.
Into the second stanza and it took some Hamish ‘out of position’ Low brilliance to score the equaliser. On a dashing run up field he took his time to pick his spot and bend one in. Substitute Ben Clixby would score the winner with a good run along the bye line before shooting near post.
Winton have improved significantly from the start of the season but for Old Boys it was another disappointing performance. Boy do we need a proper keeper.
