Prems keep pressure on with win
Vs Thistle 27 June Waverley Park
Old Boys 2 – Thistle 1
Saturday’s game marked the end of the 1st round in Donald Gray season 2020. The team were keen to build on the momentum created the week before in the win over Gore. But we knew Thistle would be a tricky prospect having not conceded any first half goals and only losing by one goal in their previous outings.
For our part we had conceded the first goal in both our matches and were determined to be first on the board this week. Conditions were good for some fast paced footy and out of the blocks that’s what the men in red turned on. Cuffy and Kyle causing a few issues with their pace while Laurent and Kris had plenty of ball in the middle. Unfortunately, the Thistle keeper went largely untested in the first stanza with the Centre Back having a strong game again.
An injury to starting keeper Terry saw young Eddie Peters called into the team. For his part he was called on to make a couple of snappy saves as at times we struggled with the size of their striker. Corners and long throws were especially a headache.
The half time message was that we needed to play to our capability and start testing the keeper. Taisei came in for Brody out wide to add some fresh legs. After sustaining some pressure from Thistle, a series of good attacks eventually led to the opening goal as Kyle was fouled in the box. He stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way for a 1-0 lead.
This seemed to spark the team and the game started to become a bit more open. The 2nd goal came from a bad pass from the Thistle keeper which went straight to Kris who drew the last man and offloaded to Cuffy who made no mistake 1v1.
With the game in its dying stages Old Boys conceded from a very strange own goal. The Karate Kid Patrick on his starting debut tried to clear a ball out for a throw in only to shank it straight at goal with Eddie only able to turn it onto his post and in. The last 2 mins were frantic, but the guys held on for the win.
Great to pick up another 3 points and keep the pressure on QP who we play next week. POD was Stovy who had another big match in the middle.
