The first match of round 2 of the Donald Gray League rolled around quickly and saw undefeated leaders Queens Park travel to Old Boys for an early top of the table clash. Both teams looking for a win to get a jump on the competition.
The match started positively for the home team in red when Jose Rodriguez scored fortuitously in the 2nd minute. Chasing through to put pressure on the keeper’s clearance the ball cannoned off Jose’s leg and went straight into the empty goal.
Disappointingly that was as good as it got in the first half for the home side. On the 15min mark Park found some space behind the backline on the right-hand side and a sharp cross found the striker unmarked in the box. His finish bobbled off both legs but did enough to deceive Terry in goal.
Parks second goal had nothing bobbly about it. From a free kick out on the edge of the box their striker took on the wall and the shot and found top bins. Parks 3rd goal before half time was a classic beat the offside trap and go through 1:1 with the keeper with Terry left stranded.
The half time message was clear – tighten up defensively and get on top in the midfield. The 2nd half started brightly for Old Boys with a few half chances and some opportunities to shoot. A goal at this stage could have turned the match but Park instead increased their lead on the 20 min mark with a powerful shot which Terry couldn’t deflect over the top.
With the game in the bag Park rang the changes to give some of their younger squad members some game time. This afforded some opportunities to the men in red and two late goals from Jared Cuff brought some respect back to the scoreline but unfortunately was too little too late.
An improved effort will be required against a Gore team who are getting stronger each week.
