After a win on Saturday for Old Boys and a draw between Gore and Queens Park this mid-week fixture allowed either team to take a points table outright lead with a win. Unfortunately, the weather gods weren’t playing ball and it was a wet night at the Turf.
Gore started the match very brightly when just 2 minutes in they hit the cross bar from close range with the follow up rebound going over the top. It was an early scare for Old Boys but after this it was mainly one-way traffic as the men in red asserted midfield dominance and had good composure on the ball. Gore for their part were often forced into hitting long balls.
Old Boys had a series of corners in the first half and a couple were nearly turned in, but the luck wasn’t quite running. Half time saw both teams retreat to the sheds to get some respite from the rain.
2nd half plan was obvious for both teams – shoot more. With the rain it was testing conditions for the keepers. The 2nd stanza offered a more end to end affair with half chances at either end. As the match wore on a draw seemed the most likely outcome although both teams did get more desperate towards the end and last-ditch defending was to the fore.
Gore had the ball in the back of the net in the dying minutes, but their striker was correctly adjudged offside by the linesperson, helping to show their value to senior matches.
A nil all draw was a result that didn’t help either team towards their goal but favoured Gore who went into the match higher on the table. POD was to Laurent.
Old Boys round out their busy week with a match against leader Queens Park on Saturday. Nearly into must win territory for the men in red.
